Ufa - the capital of Bashkortostan Republic. One of Russia’s greenest and largest metropolises sprawls in the Bashkir section of the Cis-Ural region, on the bank of the Belaya river, at the point where it is met by its tributaries Ufa and Dyoma.
Ufa City boasts one of the longest avenues in Europe: prospekt Oktyabrya covers a stretch of more than 9 kilometers! Why not also mention the largest equestrian statue – the monument to the Bashkir national hero Salavat Yulayev, rising to a height of nearly 10 (!) meters. Further still, Ufa was the hometown to the famous writers Sergey Aksakov and Sergey Dovlatov, painter Mikhail Nesterov, musicians Yuri Shevchuk and Zemfira…
Needless to say, these are not the only features which make the capital of Bashkortostan so distinct from its counterparts in Russia.
History
Our city is rich in history. In the years of the Civil War Ufa was proclaimed, even if for a short time, the capital of Russian Empire, which is unique for a fortress town founded in 1574. But over the years a small fortress turned into the administrative and economic center of the whole region. It is hard to say how large Ufa was in those distant days, but one point is obvious: the ancient city enjoyed a highly favorable geographic location, seating at the junction of many trade routes, both land and river ones.
Modern Ufa
Today’s Ufa is a huge metropolis covering 40 kilometers from southwest to northeast, while occupying the total territory of more than 700 square kilometers. High concentration of industrial facilities and social infrastructure as well as powerful investment potential secure Ufa’s prospects for cooperation. The city is in fact one of Russia’s largest interregional junction points, bringing together major railway lines, pipelines and motor highways, as well as airways and river routes.
